How to Make a Mesh Mold

A mesh mold can be made as a school science project to demonstrate how paper is made. The mold you will be making is a simple wire screen that is used to drain paper pulp. Homemade paper will result after the paper pulp fully dries and is removed from the mold.

Things You'll Need

  • 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch wooden picture frame
  • Pliers
  • Wood glue
  • Wire mesh
  • Tape measure
  • Wire cutters
  • Staple gun
  • Plastic tub or dishpan big enough to hold your frame

Instructions

      Remove the cardboard backing and glass from the frame. Pull any pins or staples out of the inside edges of the frame by using pliers.

      Measure a section of wire mesh that is 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches with the tape measure. Cut the wire mesh using the wire cutters. Repeat this step to cut a second piece of wire mesh to 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches.

      Examine the wood frame for any cracks. Fill any cracks that you can see with the wood glue and allow it to dry.

      Place the wire mesh pieces on the back of the wooden frame and attach them with the staple gun.

      Dip the mold into a plastic tub of paper pulp and hold the mold over the tub to allow the water to drain.
