How to Do Carvings in a Chair

If you have an old wooden chair that you're thinking of throwing out, give it a second chance. If the wood chair is tired looking or just plain boring, dress it up with some simple carvings. Wood carving is an art form that can be used to add style and character to your old wood chair. A novice wood carver can create a carving to be proud of.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the pattern you want to carve onto the chair onto a piece of tracing paper.

    • 2

Cut out the pattern and tape it onto the chair with masking tape. This will help direct your carving.

    • 3

Slice into the wood around the carving with a utility knife that has a new, sharp blade. Cut with the grain of the wood to remove the perimeter of the pattern through the tracing paper.

    • 4

Remove the tracing paper. You should now have a perimeter outline of your carving.

    • 5

Dig out the rest of the carving using a carving knife. Continue carving with the grain of the wood.

    • 6

Sand the pattern smooth with 220-grit sandpaper when you're happy with it.

    • 7

Clean off the dust from the chair with a damp cloth.
