How to Use a Chinese Cross Key

Most western keys -- those in Europe or America -- are designed "flat," with no part of the key spreading out along the horizontal axis. A Chinese cross key, by contrast, has both a horizontal component and a vertical component. The result, if you look at the key straight on, is a key that resembles a cross shape. These keys are common in China and their corresponding locks are often used on residential doors to keep prowlers out.

     Insert the cross key into the corresponding lock.

     Turn the key counterclockwise to engage the lock or clockwise to unlock the lock.

   • 3

     Continue turning the key until the lock is fully engaged or disengaged. It will usually take two full revolutions to completely engage or disengage the bolts.
