How to Make an Aladdin Turban

Both China and the Middle East claim versions of the Aladdin story. Aladdin is a poor tailor's son who misbehaves and attracts the attention of a magician. The magician uses Aladdin to fetch a magic oil lamp from an enchanted cave, but Aladdin is too clever to give it up easily. A similar version of the story takes place in Arabia, where Aladdin wore the traditional headgear of the region, the turban. A turban is essentially a large, long piece of fabric wrapped around the head. Aladdin from the beginning of the story wears a simple version of the headdress, being poor. Adorn the turban with beads or brooches to create an Aladdin turban in the manner he wore after he has robbed the magician.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Use fabric that is 40 to 45 inches wide, so when folded it is between 19 and 22 inches wide.

    • 2

Center the middle of the fabric on your forehead, with the bottom of the fabric touching the bridge of your nose.

    • 3

Wrap the fabric around the circumference of your head and tie a knot at the nape of your neck.

    • 4

Twist the two long pieces of fabric hanging from the knot and wrap back around to the front of your head. Continue to wrap until the turban is the height you want. But leave about 10 inches of length on each end to tie a knot.

    • 5

Tie the two ends into a square knot. Place the left piece of fabric over the right piece and pull together. Place the same left piece of fabric over the right again and loop through the hole made in the center of the two ties; this is a square knot.

Secure more colorful fabric around the turban by wrapping it and tucking into the top of the headdress. The Aladdin character is a poor boy, but he comes into wealth later in the story. So, if you are making a costume for the wealthy Aladdin, stick a brooch into the front of the turban, or tuck a string of plastic beads into the folds.
