How to Use a Magnet Zapper

A magnet zapper is a device used by RC -- or remote control -- vehicle enthusiasts to keep their motors running in top condition. As the motor in an RC vehicle runs on for long periods of time, the magnets used to move the motor typically begin to lose strength. When used properly, a magnet zapper can restore the motor's magnets to their maximum strength. Contrary to popular belief among RC enthusiasts, a magnet zapper cannot super-charge a motor's magnets and make them stronger. It can only boost the magnets' strength back to their maximum capacity. This is why it's typically pointless to use a magnet zapper on a brand-new RC motor.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the magnet zapper into a nearby electrical outlet.

    • 2

      Turn on the magnet zapper.

    • 3

Remove the motor can -- the electric motor's protective outer shell -- from your RC vehicle. The motor can should have two magnets on the outside: an "S" magnet and an "N" magnet.

    • 4

Insert the motor can into the magnet zapper's receptacle slot, with the "S" magnet up. Most magnet zappers can accommodate a wide variety of motor can sizes.

    • 5

Set the rocker switch on the magnet zapper to "Charge." Some magnet zappers are designed to magnetize motor cans automatically when set to charge, but others must be charged and fired manually. If your zapper is not automatic, it should have a "Charge" button. Hold the "Charge" button for about 90 seconds to build up the magnetic charge, and then release.

    • 6

Flip the rocker switch back to "Fire," if the zapper is manual. Make sure the motor can is correctly oriented. Press the "Fire" button to magnetize the motor can. Let the motor can sit for several minutes, and then remove it from the magnet zapper.
