How to Make a Float With a Pallet

Anyone who's ever dreamed of being lost at sea or shipwrecked can see the necessity of using whatever is at hand. To make a flotation device out of a wooden shipping pallet you'll need several other items to make the pallet seaworthy. Knowing how to make use of basic swimming or boating equipment could come in handy if your hypothetical situation ever becomes a reality. Objects such as pool noodles are useful because, according to Pool Center.com, they are "made of closed cell foam [and] bend into all sorts of shapes." Floating on a wooden shipping palette may not be ideal, but it is certainly possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the palette over so that the bottom of it is facing out. You'll most likely want to do this on a flat surface.

    • 2

Staple two pool noodles to the bottom of the pallet, one running from each end and crossing the other noodle. They should cross in the center so that one bulges out over the other. Secure them by stapling in several portions along each section of the noodles.

    • 3

Attach strips of velcro to the the edges of all four quadrants created by the crossed noodles. You'll need velcro with a sticky/glue side to fasten to the noodles themselves. Allow the velcro sticky side to dry for about 20 minutes.

    • 4

Place the corresponding velcro pieces around the sides of four flotation inner tubes. Allow these to dry for another 20 minutes.

    • 5

Place the inner tubes into the each of the four quadrants. Press them snugly into the spaces around the noodles so that the velcro sticks firmly.

    • 6

Flip the pallet back over so that the tubes and noodles are on the bottom. Place it in the water to test its ability to float.
