How to Make a Small Metal Casting Forge

Shaping metal such as iron or steel requires high temperatures that will make the metal soft. To do this you need a forge. Air is added to the forge to increase the amount of combustion that results in a hotter fire. You can make yourself a small forge to heat metal by using materials that you can find at a local salvage yard in your area.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal car wheel
  • 4-inch threaded metal pipe
  • Welder
  • Rebar
  • 6-inch square metal plate
  • Power drill
  • Metal pipe tee
  • PVC pipe

Instructions

    • 1

Set the metal car wheel on the ground with the front facing up. Set the 4-inch metal pipe over the hole for the axle nut.

    • 2

Weld the metal pipe to the wheel with the welder. If you do not have a welder see if there is a welder in local area that can do the job.

    • 3

Weld three 12-inch pieces of rebar to the face of the wheel for the legs of the forge. Weld three smaller pieces to the legs to act as braces. Set the forge right-side up on the legs.

    • 4

Drill 25 evenly spaced holes into a 6-inch square metal plate with the power drill. Place the metal plate inside of the wheel.

    • 5

Screw the metal pipe T to the threaded pipe on the bottom of the metal car wheel. Turn the metal pipe T clockwise to tighten on the threaded pipe.

    • 6

Attach a blower to the metal pipe tee with a piece of PVC pipe.
