How to Make a Slip Knot Trap

Set up a trap that catches small forest animals, such as foxes and raccoons, by using a slip knot to capture the animal. Construct a snare trap out of rope and bait by tying the slip knot at the end of the rope and setting it near a baited area. A slip knot slides down the length of a rope when tightened, making the loop reduce in size while it is being pulled. A surrounding tree with branches 6 to 8 feet above the ground triggers the slip when an the animal tries to escape the hoop. A snare trap can be set up in less than 5 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a suitable location for your trap. Your trap should be concealed as not to draw attention, and should be set using a tree with branches between 6 and 8 feet above the ground. Make sure that the tree you choose is thick enough to support the weight of the animal trying to escape the trap when it's caught.

    • 2

Tie a slip knot in the rope. Make a loop around the length of the rope with its end, then tie it in a knot. Make sure that the loop slides down the length of the rope when it is pulled. This is essential for capturing the animal when the trap is triggered. Slide it backward until there is a hoop approximately a foot in diameter.

    • 3

Tie the rope to a thick branch on the same tree. Loop the rope around the branch and tie it into a knot. The branch you choose needs to be strong enough to keep the animal from breaking it when caught in the trap.

    • 4

Set the trap. Dangle the rope over another branch, allowing the slip knot to hang 4 to 5 inches in the air. Disguise the slip knot snare trap along the trail, such as between bushes or thin tree branches.

    • 5

Draw the animal to the trap. Make a trail out of acorns, peanuts, or assorted nuts that leads to the trap. When a deer or other animal sticks its head through the hoop made with the slip knot, its natural reaction will be to pull away from it as it tightens. The animal will become captured as the rope tied around its neck or antlers holds it to the tree.
