How to Use Leather Stamp Gun Belts

Originally, gun belts were developed almost exclusively for military use and were made in large factories to generic specifications. In the mid 1800s, as many settlers expanded into the largely lawless American West, gun belts and holsters became more popular with civilians. Gun belts were produced in a number of styles, such as the Californian, the Buscadero, the Cheyenne and others. These gun belts were generally made by leather saddle makers and often decorated with intricate leather stamping and conchos.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the holster to the gun belt if you will be wearing a gun with the belt and if the holster is not already connected. Some authentic historical gun belts have the holster as a separate piece. As this equipment is generally custom-made by small suppliers, the connection will be slightly different for every holster. The belt may be threaded through a loop on the holster or it may be snapped into place.

    • 2

Place your bullet cartridges in the loops provided on the belt. Most decoratively stamped leather gun belts are made for a classic Western-style revolver, which holds only six bullets. The gun belt can often hold an additional 20 bullets. Push the bullets in, tip facing down.

    • 3

Wrap the belt around your hips in a comfortable location. Connect the belt through the buckle.

    • 4

Place your gun in the holster. Letting one side of the holster slightly sag may make it easier to draw the weapon. Adjust the belt angle and holster angle to your satisfaction.

    • 5

Tie the straps coming from the holster around your leg. Not all gun belts have these straps, but if yours does, you will see them hanging down from the holster. Wrap each strap around the leg and tie them together where they meet.

    • 6

Place the hammer thong over the hammer of the weapon. This is a small loop on the outside of the leather holster. Pull the loop up and slip it over the hammer to keep the gun from falling out of the holster.
