How to Get a Manga License

Manga, or Japanese comics, is an international sensation, with more popular titles being translated into a score of languages by companies all over the world. Though publishing manga through the acquisition of its license is usually done by larger companies, with the right connections and resources, anyone can license and print his own titles.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a manga that you want to license and ensure that it is not currently licensed for your country by contacting either the original Japanese publisher or a number of localized publishers. Licenses may only last a set number of years, so it is possible that older titles are now unlicensed, although they had been printed in the past.

    • 2

Contact the original Japanese publisher to discuss licensing rights. These can include such things as costs, usage restrictions, publishing expectations and your plans for the title.

    • 3

Find a distributor within your country that is willing to distribute the title once you have it printed.

    • 4

Work with translators to translate the Japanese text into your local language.

    • 5

Hire lettering specialists to erase the Japanese text and letter, or draw in the new text and sound effects received from the translator.

    • 6

Work with an editor to edit the title to ensure there are no textual or graphical mistakes, and ensure the manga it set up to print properly.

    • 7

Contract a print shop to print a large run of the manga and ship it to your distributor for distribution at stores within targeted markets.
