How to Fish With an Ugly Stick

Shakespeare's "Ugly Stik" fishing rods are the most popular fishing rods in America. Made of a durable and flexible graphite composite, the Ugly Stik is resistant to breaks and able to bend to a large degree. To maximize your catch and enjoyment when fishing with an Ugly Stik, you will have to choose a model that matches the type of fishing you wish to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what kind of fishing you are going to do and get an Ugly Stik to match. If you will be using the pole for a variety of freshwater fishing styles and have no specific special needs, purchase an Ugly Stik Freshwater Rod for all-around performance. If you will be catching catfish primarily, purchase an Ugly Stik Catfish Rod. For salmon and steelhead, you will need a heavier and longer rod, so pick up an Ugly Stik Salmon/Steelhead Rod. For catching a variety of larger fish in salt and freshwater, use an Ugly Stik Tiger Rod. Purchase an Ugly Stik Pack Rod if you will be hiking to remote areas and need a rod that can break down into small pieces. Use an Ugly Stik Bigwater Rod for catching large fish in deep, offshore waters.

    • 2

Purchase a specialty reel for bigwater, salmon or steelhead fishing. In addition to requiring a longer, stouter pole, these types of fishing require a heavy-duty reel.

    • 3

Decide whether you are going to use a spin-casting or a bait-casting reel. A spin-casting reel can be used for a number of fishing techniques and may be the best choice if you are using an Ugly Stik Freshwater Rod. If you are doing a lot of bass fishing, you may wish to use a bait-casting reel, as they can provide more accurate lure placement.

    • 4

Attach the reel to the Ugly Stik. Find the threaded nut and two rings at the bottom of the rod. Place the attaching arm of the reel onto this area of the pole and tighten the nut by turning counterclockwise. Follow the instructions on your reel for threading the line. You may wish to leave the rod disassembled until you reach your angling location.

    • 5

Assemble the rod when you are ready. Most Ugly Stik models come in three pieces. The pieces slip into each other with no special connectors required. Twist the parts of the rod so the eyes for threading the line up. Pull some line out of the reel, thread it through the eyes and attach preferred fishing rig.
