How to Disassemble Front Forks

Taking the front fork from a motorcycle is necessary for several different mechanical functions. First of all, the fork oil needs periodic changes, and many cycles require you to remove the fork to do that. Replacing damper rods, putting in longer spacers, and switching out fork seals are other tasks that require you to take the whole thing out.

Things You'll Need

  • Fork oil
  • 2 Oil seals
  • 2 Dust seals
  • Measuring cup
  • Jar for old fork oil
  • Ruler
  • Magic marker
  • Plastic cup
  • Funnel
  • Rags and paper towels
  • Stand
  • Hex wrench set
  • Socket wrench set
  • Screwdriver
  • Mallet
  • 8-inch piece of PVC, 1.75 inches across
  • Clamp

Instructions

    • 1

Slice the PVC all the way down one side and put the clamp around it.

    • 2

Prop the motorcycle on a stand and take the front wheel off. Use the wrench set to remove the front brake calipers. Then, take off the fork brace.

    • 3

Turn the pinch bolts on the triple clamp counterclockwise to loosen them to the point where you can turn them by hand. Then remove the fork caps. You may need a screwdriver or paint can opener to take them off. Then loosen the lower bolts.

    • 4

Push the plug in with a screwdriver. Get an assistant to pry off the circlip while you're holding the plug in. Remove the plug. Then, get a bottle to hold your old fork oil. Remove your drain bolt once you've got the funnel and container in place beneath it, and drain the oil.

Hold the front fork in our hand while you use your wrench set to loosen the pinch bolts down on the lower fork brace, then slide the fork out. You're ready to handle interior repairs at this point. To reassemble the fork onto the bike, follow these steps in reverse.
