How to Make a Loom With a Comb

A knitting loom mimics the look of knitted stitches without the need to master the use of two needles. You can purchase knitting looms in a variety of sizes, or you can get creative and make your own. Using a comb and a few other supplies, you can make a knitting-style loom in a few minutes' time, with no prior knitting or weaving experience required.

Things You'll Need

  • Wooden scrap board
  • Sandpaper
  • Comb
  • Heavy duty glue
  • Yarn

Instructions

  1. Build the Loom

    • 1

Sand the edges of a piece of scrap wood that is approximately 1 inch high and the same length as the comb itself or slightly longer.

    • 2

Position the comb so that the flat, back side of the comb is flush with the tabletop and the teeth of the comb stick straight up in the air.

    • 3

Place a line of glue along one long edge of the wooden board, then push it up against the comb so that they adhere together. The teeth of the comb should still stick straight up; the board is there to secure the comb in its upright position when the loom rests on a table.

    • 4

Hold the comb together with the board until the glue is fully dry.

    Knit on the Loom

    • 5

Make a slipknot in the end of a skein of yarn, leaving a 4-inch tail. Pull the slipknot down over the tooth on the left side of the comb as you face it and pull gently to secure it.

    • 6

Wrap the yarn around the first peg of the loom, making a counter-clockwise wrap that resembles a lowercase letter "e." Move down the comb, wrapping each peg in this manner.

    • 7

Turn the loom around and wrap each new peg from the opposite end back down to the starting position in the same manner you used in Step 2.

    • 8

Put the skein of yarn off to the side, still attached to the loom wraps. Hold the loom in front of you with the wood behind it and the comb facing you. Lift the bottom loop (the slipknot) on the far left comb tooth, bringing it up and over the tooth from back to front; let it drop. Repeat this across the loom from left to right to knit your first row of stitches.

    • 9

Pick up the working yarn again (attached to the skein) and wrap each tooth on the loom once more, stopping on the right side. Knit one more row of stitches by lifting the bottom loop of each tooth up and over the tooth as in Step 4. Repeat this step to continue knitting your piece.
