How to Make a Shirt With a Hundred Dollar Bill

Origami --- the process of turning paper into a shape --- is an ancient Japanese art. Money is a popular medium for origami enthusiasts --- who call themselves "paper folders" --- because it is readily available and standard in size. In addition, folding money into shapes becomes an enjoyable way to leave tips for waitresses, and to give monetary gifts for any occasion from birthdays to graduations. Folding a $100 bill into a tiny shirt is a simple and engaging way to deliver a birthday present, celebrate a graduation, or give a holiday gift to your dry cleaner or housekeeper.

Instructions

    • 1

Lie the $100 bill flat in front of you on the table, with the short edge of the bill facing toward you. Make your first fold by creating a fold one-third of the way up the bill, folding the bottom edge up. Make a sharp crease with your fingernail, a pencil or a quarter.

    • 2

Flip the folded $100 bill over. Fold the $100 bill in half, this time vertically, making a sharp crease down the center of the bill. Unfold and smooth, without erasing the crease. Fold in the left and right sides to meet at the center crease.

    • 3

Fold the two bottom corners of the $100 bill up and outward, similar to the wings of a paper airplane, creating the shirt's sleeves. The angles don't need to be precise. Again, make sure the folds are heavily creased to ensure the paper "sleeves" will lie flat once the shirt is completed.

    • 4

Flip the $100 bill over once more. The "sleeves" should still be at the bottom left and right of the bill, closest to you. Fold down the top edge of the $100 bill towards you, about one-quarter of an inch. This fold will ultimately become the shirt's collar.

    • 5

Flip the $100 bill over again, with the folded "sleeves" of the shirt once more at the edge nearest you, facing up. Fold the top left and right corners in toward each other, letting the corners meet at the center line. The angle is unimportant, as long as the corners meet at the center.

    • 6

Fold the $100 bill in half, folding the bottom edge up toward the collar. Tuck the straight bottom edge --- between the collars --- under the collar. Sharpen the bottom crease with a fingernail to ensure the shirt doesn't unfold.
