How to Fix the Cord on an ESS Butane Soldering Iron

The ESS butane soldering iron is a model Weller made. You can use it to to make field repairs when connected to its butane adapter or powered by electricity in the shop when you plug it into an electrical socket. If the wire on the ESS soldering iron ever becomes nicked, melted or damaged, you can repair it. It will take approximately 30 minutes.

  • Wire strippers
  • Soldering iron
  • Rosin core solder
  • Heat shrink tubing
  • Heat gun

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the cord from the ESS soldering iron. Plug in a separate soldering iron and let it heat up.

      Pull away the outer sheathing on the damaged cord with wire strippers. Also strip away the cover on the individual damaged wire or wires.

      Twist the ends of the damaged wires together by hand.

      Place the solder just beneath these connections, then touch the tip of the soldering iron to it.

      Place a section of heat-shrink tubing over the entire repair. Plug in the heating gun and pass it once or twice over the shrink tubing to melt it into place.
