Select the type of deep-cycle battery that suits your requirements. The three basic types are flooded cell, gel and absorbed glass mat, or AGM. Flooded cell batteries contain liquid electrolyte and can leak if they are not kept upright. Gel and AGM batteries do not leak electrolyte, as the chemical basis is, respectively, a gel or a dry cell. A gel or AGM battery is the safest option for usage in something mobile that may turn over, such as a golf cart.
Buy a deep-cycle battery that suits your budget. Flooded cell are the least expensive, and AGM batteries are the most expensive; gel batteries are a little less expensive than AGM batteries. Research online prior to purchase to obtain an idea of current prices.
Consider the intended method to charge the battery. If you buy a gel battery, it is advisable to purchase a gel-battery charger, because this battery charges in a different manner than other deep-cycle batteries. Charging a gel battery using a regular charger can damage it irreparably. Flooded-cell and AGM batteries can be charged using any regular lead-acid battery charger.
Buy a deep-cycle battery from a retailer that specializes in them. Visit the store to actually see the battery and feel the weight of different units. Gel and flooded-cell batteries weigh considerably more than AGM batteries. View a selection of each type of battery, compare prices and consult the sales staff for any advice that you need.
