How to Move a Hammond M3 Organ

Hammond organs made their debut in 1934. Many different styles were made through the years, from the B3 with its distinctive sound to the M-series spinets, and portable models such as the Porta-B. With musicians on the road often, Hammonds had to travel also. Hammonds may look hearty -- and they are, with their beautiful wood -- but they are delicate instruments on the inside with springs, wiring, tubes and other critical parts to protect. Moving a Hammond M3 or any Hammond organ can be a complicated task, but if you follow some basic steps it will ensure that your organ arrives at its destination safe and sound.

Instructions

Lock down the tone generator by tightening down the four screws under the console. The parts inside are made to "float" for sound effect, but when moving the organ these must be locked in place. Check the oil cups to see if these are too full. You may want to remove some of the oil in the event that it splashes during transit.

    • 2

Push in all of the drawbars so that they are not damaged. Unplug any removable cables and tie them neatly. If the cable is fixed, unplug, wrap and tie it. Place a cover on the organ to avoid dust or debris and scratches to the cabinet. Tubes may also be removed if you are concerned that they might become broken during the trip.

    • 3

Secure the organ dollies on each end of the cabinet, and fasten the straps around the organ. With a person at each end, guide the organ to its transportation. Upon arrival, set it up by performing the steps in reverse. Check to see that the oil cups have the proper amount of oil, and your organ should be ready to make music.
