How to Store Your BCD

In the world of scuba diving, a BCD is a diver's best friend. BCDs, or buoyancy control devices, use a series of inflatable bladders to help you adjust your buoyancy on deep dives. Using a BCD helps you ascend safely as well as find a comfortable hovering position for photographs or exploration. Cleaning and storing your BCD are critical steps in protecting this important investment, and the process for both is relatively straightforward. You will want your BCD to last as long as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse your BCD in cool, fresh water. Salt and chlorine can cause damage to your BCD if left to sit.

    • 2

Inflate your BCD to its maximum pressure value.

    • 3

Hold the BCD so the deflator hose is facing down.

    • 4

Deflate the BCD. This helps remove any water that may have built up inside the device during a dive.

    • 5

Fill the BCD with clean, fresh water. Shake the device to loosen particles and chemicals, then open the deflator valve and empty it again.

    • 6

Hang your BCD in a cool, dry place with the deflator valve facing down. Hang the BCD in a place without direct sunlight.
