How to Make a Radio Control Plane

Those not inclined to acquire a pilot's license can still experience the joy of flight with a radio-controlled plane. Hobbyists who enjoy building their own equipment can readily construct a radio-controlled plane using a kit: many people use large and elaborate kits to construct working models of famous planes such as the F-16 or C-47 Skytrain. Those who choose this path derive satisfaction from converting raw materials into an object capable of flight. Some people enjoy gathering to fly and display their planes with like-minded hobbyists.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a radio-controlled airplane kit, taking care to purchase a kit designed for beginners if you do not have experience making radio-controlled model planes.

    • 2

Cut the kit's parts free from one another and from the packaging they include using the knife, saw and pliers as necessary. Use the knife as necessary to remove nubs or other bits of remaining plastic or wood.

    • 3

Use sandpaper to smooth wooden and plastic parts to remove imperfections and make rough surfaces become smooth.

    • 4

Glue the plane's main body together, then glue its wings, tail and cockpit together following the instructions that came in the kit. Attach the engine and radio-control wiring as instructed by the manufacturer. Allow time for drying--you may need to complete this portion of the construction in stages. Gently test the strength of your work by pulling and tugging on the components, and apply glue to any component that is not sufficiently strong.

    • 5

Cover the plane in the tissue, silk or woven fiberglass that came with kit--it will bond with the wood and dry. Spray a mist of water over your work, or using your finger, apply water everywhere the tissue paper touches the frame.

    • 6

Paint the plane following the directions in the kit, or, if you prefer, find a picture of your plane in action and use it to paint the model--hobbyists constructing a military model may find excellent photographs on the website of the appropriate armed service.

    • 7

Allow the paint to dry and apply finishing touches. Purchase, if you like, an action toy and place it in the cockpit of the plane to represent the pilot.
