How to Oil a Stenograph Reporter

The Stenograph was introduced in 1882 by Miles M. Bartholomew. Allowing you to create a shorthand version of speech at 240 words per minute or more, stenography is still used in fields such as court reporting and medical transcribing. Depending upon usage, it's recommended that a Stenograph be oiled or lubricated every one to two years. There are specific procedures that can help you to lubricate your Stenograph to prolong its life.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Stenograph. Place paper in the machine, making sure the platen is covered. The platen is the plate that contains the symbols on the Stenograph.

    • 2

Locate the two holes on either side of the platen. Insert your oil or lubrication into the tiny holes by squeeze a small amount into the hole using gentle pressure. Stop greasing when the hole is filled.

    • 3

Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the second hole on the opposite side of the platen.

    • 4

      Turn on your Stenograph.

    • 5

Squeeze a tiny amount of oil or lubrication directly onto the platen gear. Ensure paper is still in the Stenograph to protect the platen itself. Rotate the gear with your finger or by pressing a series of keys -- ensure the gear turns over two to three times.
