How to Replace a Bezel on a Diver's Watch

A diver's watch has a bezel that not only protects the watch face, but moves counterclockwise to time your dive and calculate your oxygen tank level. When you begin your dive, you rotate the pointer at the top of the bezel and align it with the minute hand on your watch. The bezel is calibrated in minutes from one to 60. Observing the number that your minute hand aligns with on the bezel indicates how many minutes you have been under water. A bezel that becomes damaged and will no longer turn needs replacement.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a towel on a flat surface. Place your diver's watch face up on the towel.

    • 2

Tear four small strips of masking tape off the roll and slide them underneath the bezel on the top, bottom and both sides of the watch. The tape will be beneath the bezel and on top of the watch case.

    • 3

Insert the tip of a small pocket knife blade between the top of a piece of masking tape and the bezel. Rotate the knife down to gently pry the bezel upward. The bezel should pop upward from the watch case. If it doesn't pop up, insert the pocket knife tip on each additional piece of tape to loosen the bezel and rotate the knife tip down until the bezel releases from the watch case.

    • 4

Gently lift the bezel off, straight up, taking care not to disturb the small spring underneath the bezel at the 12 o'clock position.

    • 5

Remove the pieces of masking tape from the watch case without disturbing any of the internal watch parts.

    • 6

Align a new bezel onto the watch case with the arrow pointing directly up at the 12 o'clock position. Gently press down on the bezel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions with light force to pop the bezel into position. There is an audible click when the bezel is locked onto the watch case.
