How to Fix Surfboard Buckles

Buckling surfboards are a common occurrence when they are exposed to repeated stress, usually placed on one region of the board, repeatedly over time. These buckles affect the ability of the board to carry a rider properly and can often result in breakage. This can be fixed however, allowing a surfer to retain a beloved board and repairing its structural soundness for quite a few rides on waves to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Buckled board
  • 100 grit sandpaper
  • 6 oz. surfboard cloth
  • Scissors
  • Surfboard varnish
  • Paintbrush
  • 120 grit sandpaper
  • 320 grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the surfboard and see to what extent the buckle is, throughout the board or only across one side.

    • 2

Sand down the area you have evaluated on the side where the buckle rises up until it is flat again.

    • 3

Cut the surfboard cloth down to size so it fits over top of the buckle. Paint over it with varnish to completely soak the cloth and cause it to adhere to the board. Allow the varnish to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 4

Apply a second layer of the surfboard varnish, ensuring the cloth is completely covered. Allow it to dry once more. If the cloth is still not covered, apply a third layer and allow to dry.

    • 5

Sand down the varnished area with 120 grit sandpaper until smooth. Slightly wet the 320 grit sandpaper and sand down the area again where the buckle has been repaired until it is as smooth as glass.

    • 6

Repeat all the steps with any other buckles that are discovered on the board until it is completely repaired.
