The Horse's Head
Sketch a circle that will become the horse's cheek.
Draw a smaller circle, about half the size of the first circle, a little to the left and below the first circle. This will become the horse's muzzle.
Connect the muzzle and the cheek with what will become the horse's jaw line and the forehead.
Draw in the curve of the neck.
Draw a thin, upright triangle above the bigger circle and a little atop the forehead to make the horse's left ear.
Make a small oval in the big circle to give the horse its left eye.
Erase the excess pencil outlines and darken the main shape of the horse's head. This is the basic outline the horse will take.
Sketch a little more detail into the horse's head by penciling in the nostril, the cheekbone, the right ear (partly covered by the left ear), and the line of the mouth.
Add more detail, such as muscle definition, hair and mane, and eye lines.
Drawing the horse's body
Sketch an upright oval from the horse's neck. This will be the horse's chest.
Draw a circle beside the oval, to its right, to stand for the horse's belly.
Make another upright oval to the right of the circle to stand for the horse's hind end.
Elongate the left oval to add the front legs. Remember to add smaller circles for the knees and ankles.
Elongate the right oval to add the hind legs and also add smaller circles for the knees and ankles.
Erase the excess basic-shape outlines and build on the remaining outlines by darkening them to make the horse's body stand out clearly.
Draw the horse's mane from where you left off from the head.
Sketch long, curved lines from the rear part of the horse to make the horse's tail.
Add more detail such as the horse's hooves.
Drawing the soldier
Draw a thin horizontal rectangle on the horse's back. This is the saddle where the soldier will be seated.
Draw the soldier's upper body by sketching an upright rectangle on the horizontal one.
Make a circle on top of the upright rectangle to make the soldier's head.
Sketch the soldier's arms on the upper body by drawing two thin rectangles at an angle to each other near the horse's neck. Draw small circles for the hands.
Sketch the soldier's left leg by drawing two slightly thicker rectangles at angle to each other from the lower end of the upper body. Draw a small circle below the leg to make the left foot. You now have the basic outline of the soldier astride the horse.
Erase the excess pencil outlines and round off the edges.
Fill in the details of the soldier such as the face, hair, uniform, and cap.
Add a stirrup in which to place the soldier's foot.
Draw a harness on the horse's head and connect it to the soldier's hands.
