How to Make Working RC Lights

Headlights make the difference between an RC that is afraid of the dark and one that thrives in the night. Not only do headlights for your RC car look cool, they can also help you recognize the front of the vehicle when it gets far away from you and help to illuminate the road ahead.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 LED lights
  • Wire
  • Wire strippers
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • 1 AA battery compartment with switch
  • 2 AA batteries
  • Double-sided tape

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three sections of wire, each measuring 6 inches in length. Strip a 1/4-inch section off both ends of each wire

    • 2

Solder one end of a wire to each of the two LED lights. Solder a third section of wire between the two LEDs to connect them.

    • 3

Solder the wire from one LED to the positive terminal of the battery compartment. Solder the wire from the remaining LED to the negative terminal.

    • 4

Insert the AA batteries into the battery compartment, and then switch it on to check that the circuit is functional.

    • 5

Remove the body shell by disconnecting the fastener pins or screws, then pulling the body off the vehicle's chassis. Drill two holes in the front of the vehicle's outer body shell in the place where you want to position the headlights.

    • 6

Insert the LEDs through the holes, then clamp them in place with the LED brackets. Cut an inch-long section of double-sided tape, then apply one side of it to the back of the battery compartment. Attach the battery compartment to the inside of the body shell in an area that will not interfere with any moving parts.

    • 7

Test the switch to check that the lights still work, then use inch-long sections of electrical tape to secure the wire to the body shell. Remount the body shell on your RC vehicle.
