How to Make a Castle Light for Your Reception

Creating a castle light to provide lighting for your porch is an ideal way of developing a medieval theme for your house. This adornment also allows you to tone down the harsh light of a cheap light bulb, giving your porch a pleasing glow. Using thin metal sheeting as an adornment for your castle light not only mimics the granite gray of a medieval castle wall, it also allows you to use metal clippers to make a variety of patterns and shapes out of the malleable material.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of one side of your square glass lantern. Make a note of this measurement; then measure the height of the lantern, add a quarter of this measurement again, and then make a note of this measurement also. Draw a rectangle on the thin metal sheet using these measurements; use metal clippers to cut this out.

    • 2

Draw around the rectangle on the metal sheet and cut out an identical rectangle. Repeat this until you have four identical rectangles, one for each side of the lantern. Put one of the rectangles against the side of the glass lantern and mark where the glass lantern reaches on the metal rectangle. Draw crenulations -- the ramparts on a castle -- near the top of the rectangle that reach down to this mark. Cut them out with the clippers. Repeat this for each rectangle.

    • 3

At the bottom edge of each rectangle, draw a doorway with a semicircular arch. Cut this shape out with clippers. Draw windows or arrow slits on the castle walls and pierce them with a thick nail. Push the clippers into the hole and widen it before cutting around the hole to widen it further. The windows need to be wide enough to let a decent amount of light come through.

Glue the rectangles onto the glass lantern with heat-resistant glue. Mount the light bulb within the lantern and turn it on. The light emanating from the holes in the metal rectangles will give the porch a gentle ambience.
