How to Weld Alumimun With an Oxy-Act Torch

Acetylene is a common fuel for welding because it burns hotter than other fuels. It is an unstable gas and must be carefully controlled to prevent dangerous situations when using and transporting it. It is used in conjunction with pressurized oxygen to burn even hotter. Oxy-acetylene torches can weld steel, making welding aluminum and other softer metals with the hot flame quick and efficient.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on gloves, a face shield and closed-toe shoes. Also ensure you are wearing long sleeves. Wear a protective apron if you will feel safer or if your workshop requires it.

    • 2

Ignite the torch. The acetylene should be below 15 lbs. at all times. Adjust the oxygen until you have a neutral flame that is approximately six inches long with a small blue flame in the center. Hold the torch so that the metal you are welding is inside the hottest part of the flame.

    • 3

Watch the metal closely. If you are heating it properly, you will see the aluminum begin to liquefy into small pools within moments.

    • 4

Move the torch in small circles to stir the molten aluminum, moving metal from one part to another.

    • 5

Pull this molten aluminum further down the weld line. Continue this pattern until the two pieces are welded together.

    • 6

Turn off the torch by turning off the oxygen valve on the tank and then slowly closing the acetylene tank's valve.
