How to Put on a Rubber Suit

Whether you are putting on an old-fashioned, all-rubber dry suit for a bit of diving nostalgia or you have something else in mind, the last thing you need is to struggle getting your rubber suit on. Tight seals around the neck, wrists and ankles can make it difficult to get even a well-fitted suit on, so its worth preparing and getting yourself the right materials to get into your ensemble with ease.

Things You'll Need

  • Old stocking
  • Water-based lubricant
  • Unscented talcum powder
  • String
  • Bee's wax

Instructions

    • 1

Apply lubricant to the parts of the body you will struggle getting into the suit. Wrists and ankles can be particularly problematic. Use either unscented talcum powder or water-based lubricant. Perfumes and scents can attack and degrade the rubber. Oil-based lubricants can also be damaging.

Pull an old stocking over your head before trying to squeeze through the neck piece or into a hood. This will reduce friction and also help keep your hair clear of any zips.

    • 3

Tie a length of string or other material onto the zip if it is a struggle to reach it on your own, or if you do not have anyone to help you. Pull the suit on, ankles first, followed by the legs, upper body and arms. Pull the zip closed over your shoulder with the string, and then pull up the hood.

Keep zips lubricated with bee's wax to stop them from getting tight and causing problems. Simply rub the bee's wax bar along the zip every month or so to keep it closing smoothly.
