Determine the basic information about your character, including gender, name, family members and current relationships. A good exercise here is to close your eyes and envision the character as clearly as possible. At this stage, you may not know exactly how he will play into the story.
Write down the defining physical characteristics of your character. How tall is he? Is he overweight? What is his eye color? What kinds of clothes does he wear? Think of the physical traits that you typically notice in other people to help determine what kind of characteristics this particular character will have.
Determine the emotional quotient of your character. Is he optimistic or pessimistic? Is he motivated by inner happiness or by money? List the things that scare your character, as well as what he finds inspirational. This is also a good time to come up with any hobbies your character enjoys doing.
Decide how your character fits into your overall story. Is he a main character or in a supporting role? Is he the protagonist or the antagonist?
Decide on additional characteristics depending on the type of story you are writing. For example, if you're writing a fantasy story, your character may have certain magical powers. Or, your character may flashback to scenes from his childhood, so you will want to explore his youth.
