How to Raise a Teepee on a Wooden Deck

The Native Americans who traveled the western plains of America lived in easily put-together and easily taken-down homes called teepees, or tipis. The teepee is a conical tent made of large wooden poles and animal, mostly deer, skins. Each home was decorated with paints made from plants and large enough to house large extended families. Modern teepee builders place their teepees upon a wooden deck to keep from sleeping on the ground for health and comfort reasons. Raising a teepee on a deck isn't hard.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the deck and the base of the teepee. The deck must be at least one foot longer in diameter than the teepee. If this is not the case, add wood to the deck floor.

    • 2

Measure the diameter of the pole on the left of the doorway. Draw a circle on the deck in the same diameter as the pole on the left of the doorway of the teepee onto the spot on the deck where you want the doorway to sit.

    • 3

Bore a hole in the circle drawn on the deck at 1/4-inch wider diameter than that of the drawing. Make the hole 1 inch deep. It is best to bore the hole 1/4 inch wider than the diameter of the pole to ensure the pole will slide in and out of the hole in the deck easily.

    • 4

Measure the distance from the first pole to the next pole and mark this distance on the deck. Create a hole in the deck using the same method for each pole in the teepee.

    • 5

Enlist a friend or two, depending upon the size of the teepee, to help you lift the teepee and align the poles with their corresponding holes in the deck.

    • 6

Place the poles into the holes on the deck and finish setting up the teepee.
