How to Diddle on Drums

Diddle, short for paradiddle, is a basic rudiment of drumming. A rudiment is a pattern that is repeated over and over to create a beat. If you are interested in mastering the diddle, it is important to practice over and over until you have it down. The paradiddle is not an overly complicated rudiment, but it requires some patience before you can play it like a professional drummer.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn the pattern for the diddle. It consists of "Right Left Right Right Left Right Left Left." Right refers to your right hand and left to your left hand.

    • 2

Practice this on your practice pad until you can repeat the pattern easily. Use your metronome to keep time if you are having trouble. Move to the drum set once you have the hang of it.

    • 3

Use your foot on the bass drum for beats one and three of the diddle. Use your left hand on your left snare drum and your right hand on the hi hat for an interesting combination.

    • 4

Practice on different variations of drums in your drum set while keeping the same main structure in place.
