Pourable two-part sealant
A two-part polysulfide pourable seam sealant is one of the caulk varieties available for use with a teak deck. This type of caulk comes in quarts and gallons. The two components of the caulk must be thoroughly hand-mixed before use. Once they have been mixed, the caulk begins to set. Warmer temperatures will contribute to faster setting as well. For this reason, it is preferable to use the quart-size containers of this caulk and to caulk during cooler weather.
One-Part Cartridges
Tube-shaped cartridges of teak wood seam sealer are ready-mixed and packaged in a pointed, squeezable applicator. One-part cartridges can be used to caulk the entire deck. Even if you choose to use a two-part caulk for the deck, keep a one-part cartridge on hand for quick repairs and touch-ups. An unopened cartridge has a 12-month shelf life but must be used all at once when opened.
Aged Caulk
When applying fresh caulk to a previously caulked teak deck, the aged caulk must be completely removed in order for the new caulk to adhere to the teak planks. The old caulk can be scraped out with a hot knife or a bent screwdriver. If the aged caulk is resistant and leaves a residue, the plank sides can be routed to clean the edge and prepare the seam for the new caulk.
Primer
Some manufacturers suggest using a primer before caulking. This is to seal the teak edge and prevent any oil from escaping from the teak plank and interfering with caulk adhesion. Other brands insist primer is not necessary. Check with the manufacturer of your selected brand to verify the necessity of primer.
