Raw Chicken
Trapping a fox that repeatedly kills chickens from a home coop is one of the most common reasons for trying to catch the pests. Raw chicken, therefore, is quite attractive to animals that have repeatedly broken in to the coop. Place cut-up chicken -- with a slightly rotten smell from sitting in the sun -- on the trap. Sprinkle other scents over it if desired to make the bait even more attractive.
Fresh Glands
Coyote or fox glands can be used as a food for trapping the animals. When a freshly caught fox is killed and skinned, remove the anal glands along with six inches of the attached intestines. Grind them up with the bladder and pour urine from the bladder on to cover it. This can be used right away or kept to ripe over time in a jar with a covering for up to two years.
Rotten Eggs
While the stench of rotten eggs may be repellent to humans, it is quite attractive to a variety of small animals, from fox to coyotes. These are better for use in cooler temperatures, when flies are no longer around and the smell will not be too noxious when setting the trap up. The eggs can be prepared several months in advance of their use by cracking eggs in to a jar, shaking to combine, and placing the lid on to allow them to ferment and go bad. Place the lid on the jar but do not tighten it as the gasses from the rotting eggs can cause it to break or explode.
Oils
Oils can be easily combined with foods to accentuate their attractiveness to foxes. Fish oil is one of the best to use, especially if it has a strong scent. This encompasses many oils that can be found at regular food stores, such as cod liver oil. Drizzle it on foods or on the trap itself in order to lure the animal to the trap.
