Preparing For The Draft
Before participating in your fantasy league's online auction draft - regardless of sport - you will need to determine a budget. As Yahoo Sports' Brad Evans suggests, have a concrete action plan in place prior to the draft so you know how much cash you are willing to devote to a specific position. Use spreadsheets and organized calculations to track your budget offline, and complete a "mock draft" to estimate when specific players will be drafted in your league.
Pre-Draft Software
Many computer programs and software are available for download or purchase to assist with your online auction draft. For example, FantasyDraftTools.com offers a computer program that allows you to pre-rank available players per position, per team, and per auction cost. You can also export these rankings to an Excel spreadsheet if you wish.
Strength of Schedule
Another useful tool for online auction drafts is a "strength of schedule" report that is available on most fantasy sport hosting services. This report shows how difficult a player's season is projected to be for that year based on the teams he will play. Once you have this information you can determine how much of your budget you will want to allot towards a certain player. For example, a high-ranking player who plays a difficult schedule may not be as valuable as a slightly lower-ranking player who plays a weaker schedule.
Research Additional Auction Results
Perhaps the most important and useful tool you can use for your online auction draft is to borrow ideas from other fantasy sport experts. Each season these experts will detail the results of their own personal online auction drafts, including tips on strategy and additional information about a particular player that interests you.
