Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure your table length and width.
Add a drop length to each of these measurements. This is the length of fabric hanging off the edge of the table. A casual drop is 12 inches. Formal cloths have a 16- to 24-inch drop and floor length tablecloths reach to 1/2 inch from the floor.
Add 4 inches all around for a seam allowance.
Plan a pattern for each quilt square and for the entire tablecloth including drop length and seam allowances. Note the size of an individual finished individual quilt piece.
Figure the minimum number of squares needed to make a quilt to cover your table. Divide the dimensions of your individual quilt squares into the total table covering measurements. This will determine the number of squares necessary to piece your tablecloth together.
Incorporate border measurements at the edges of your cloth and also around individual quilt squares. Personal preference determines these details. Include border dimensions to fit within the total measurements for the table covering.
Draw a sketch of the finished tablecloth.
Calculate the fabric yardage you need to purchase. One yard of fabric is needed to make twelve 10-inch squares. Figure other yardage requirements according to the quilt square size and the width of the fabric on the bolt.
Buy thin cotton batting the same size as your quilted tablecloth top. Batting-filled quilts help protect your table top from warm plates. Quilt tops may also be simply pressed for a flat table covering.
Measure and cut a backing for your tablecloth.
