How to Cast a Fishnet

Using a fishnet to catch fish is an effective way of netting multiple varieties of fish. With the help of a fishnet you can trap different types of fish ranging from shrimp to mullet, unlike a rod where you can bait only a single fish at a time. However, to effectively bait fish you must use the correct technique to cast your fishnet.

Instructions

    • 1

Untangle the fishnet and straighten it out. Slip the wrist loop of the hand line around your right wrist if you are right-handed and your left wrist if you are left-handed. Gather the remainder of the hand line in small coils around the same hand and hold it.

    • 2

Use your other hand to hold the top of the cast net just below the horn. The horn is the circular plastic, metal or wood ring where the top of the net is tied. Use the same hand to straighten the net and draw it towards your hip in such a way that it touches the ground.

    • 3

Roll the net up and away from your hip area and place it in your hand with the wrist loop, along with the rest of the net.

    • 4

With your free hand, hold the section of the fishnet's lead line closest to you. Identify the lead line by the weights that surround it. Bend down and scoop the bottom of the fishnet in your free hand. You will now be holding half the weight of the fishnet in each hand.

    • 5

Position yourself in the water to cast the net, holding it at elbow level. Rotate the fishnet about 45 degrees to your left-hand side to release. Let go of the portion of the fishnet in your right hand first, followed by the left hand, maintaining it close to your body while doing so. The fishnet will open up.

    • 6

Wait for three minutes to allow the fishnet to sink to the bottom. Use the hand line to draw the fishnet out of the water. You will land a good haul of fish if you select a good location.
