How to Dye a Cycling Jersey Black

Cycling jerseys, or any jersey for that matter, are easily dyed using an acid dye. Acid dyes, found at any arts and crafts or fabric store, will dye your fabric right in your own washing machine. Any white or colored jersey can be dyed black as long as it is washable in hot water and is the appropriate material.

Things You'll Need

  • 8 oz. black fabric acid dye
  • Salt (if necessary)
  • Mild detergent
  • Regular detergent
  • 1 cup bleach

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your washing machine on to the hottest water temperature. If you're only dyeing one jersey, set the water level to "small."

    • 2

Pour 8 oz. of black fabric acid dye directly into the hot water once it fills the washer. Depending on the brand of dye used, you may need to add 2 tbsp. of salt to the water, according to product instructions.

    • 3

Place your jersey in the washing machine and allow it to "dye" for the remainder of the cycle.

    • 4

Remove the jersey from the washing machine and rinse it under warm water.

    • 5

Hand wash the jersey with warm water and a mild detergent until the water runs clear. Dry the jersey as usual.
