How to Sow Iron & Clay Peas for Deer

Iron peas, also called clay peas, cow peas and deer peas, are a type of bean that you can plant in a variety of soils. Though they can be used by humans for food, iron peas are also preferred by deer for both the bean and the plant. Sowing and planting these beans is relatively simple, especially if you know what you need and you make sure to give the beans room to grow.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you're going to plant in rows, or in scatter. For a scatter planting, you'll need 60 pounds of seed. For row planting, you'll need 20 to 30 pounds of seed. This is assuming a 1-acre spread.

    • 2

Clear the land. You want to have the soil available, the rows laid out if you're planting in rows and all weeds and additional, unwanted plants pulled out and thrown away. Dig the holes for the seeds between a half inch and a full inch down, or if you're going to lay down the seeds have the additional soil ready to bury them in.

    • 3

Spread the seed over the area. You can use your hands and spread out the seeds, or you can use a wheeled seed spreader. Once the seed is spread, cover it over between a half inch and an inch of soil.
