How to Calculate the Height of a Bullet

The height of a bullet that is fired is determined by the highest point for its path of travel. This is called a trajectory and is a specific course that a bullet travels once it is fired. When a gun is fired at a target, it will begin to drop in height as it travels. You can determine the height drop by using measurements at a specific distance from the target.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the 100-yard marker for the gun range.

    • 2

Hold up the gun in a firing position. Verify that the safety is on and keep your finger away from the trigger.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the barrel of the gun to the ground with a tape measure. Make a note of the measurement.

    • 4

Fire the gun at the target. Examine the target and note the location of the bullet hole.

    • 5

Move back to the 200-yard marker. Hold the gun in firing position at the same height you measured in Step 3.

    • 6

Fire the gun at the target. Examine the target and make a note of the bullet hole.

    • 7

Measure from the ground to the first hole and make a note of the measurement. Measure to the second hole and note the measurement.

    • 8

Subtract the second measurement from the first to determine height drop from 100 yards to 200 yards.
