DIY: LED Light Box

Light boxes that are used for decoration can be made from many types of material. When illuminating a light box with LED light, you can use acrylic. Acrylic is a type of hard plastic that comes clear or frosted that you can cut into pieces to form a box. You can then use a LED strip inside of the box as your light source. Tools and materials for this project can be found at your local home improvement store.

Things You'll Need

Frosted acrylic sheet
Felt tip marker
Jigsaw
Sandpaper
1/4-inch drill bit
Power drill
Hot glue
LED light strips

Instructions

  Draw the plates you will need for the light box on the acrylic sheet with a felt tip marker. You will need four long rectangular pieces and two small square pieces.

  Cut the plates from the acrylic sheet with a jigsaw. Sand any sharp edges with the sandpaper.

  Insert a 1/4-inch drill bit into the chuck of the power drill. Drill a hole into the end of one of the long pieces of acrylic.

  Apply a bead of glue to the top edges of two long rectangular pieces with the glue gun. Place a third piece on top and allow the glue to dry.

  Apply a bead of glue to the side edges of the long rectangle pieces. Set the square pieces for the sides in place and allow the glue to dry. You will now have a box shape with the top open.

  Peel the backing from a LED light strip. Place the LED light strip along the bottom of the acrylic box.

  Insert the adapter cable for the LED light into the hole you cut into the acrylic in Step 3. Attach the end of the adapter to the LED light.

  Apply a bead of glue along the top edge of the acrylic box. Place the remaining piece of acrylic on top and allow the glue to dry.

  Plug the adapter into an electrical outlet to illuminate the LED light box.
