What Are Some Hobbies for Old Retired People?

After you retire, you may become bored and restless, wondering what to do with your time. Many old retired people begin finding hobbies to take up their time. There may be things a person was interested in throughout her life, but lacked the time to pursue it. After retiring she may decide to pursue that hobby now or may find something completely new and different to do to take up her time.
  1. Reading

    • One common hobby people of all ages enjoy is reading. Old retired people often take up this hobby because it is enjoyable and helps pass the time. You can find books on any subject to suit anyone's likes and tastes. Many books are now available in large print as well, which are ideal for older people with poor eyesight. Older retired people may also enjoy joining a book club at a local library, church or community center. Book clubs are a way to meet people and discuss various books.

    Collections

    • Old retired people may take up collecting as a hobby. Collecting is a hobby with unlimited possibilities. A person may collect coins, cards, books, bells, paper weights, snow globes, dolls, wine and toys. People who collect things often pass the time by finding these items for their collections. They may do this on the Internet or by visiting garage sales and flea markets.

    Crafts

    • Retired men and women find pleasure in making crafts. Old retired people can make many different kinds of crafts out of many types of supplies. Yarn is one supply that people use as a hobby for crocheting or knitting. Men often enjoy woodworking, making birdhouses, wooden signs or mailboxes. Other craft hobbies include needlework, quilting, scrapbooking, pottery and candle making.

    Volunteering

    • Many retired people may enjoy giving back to their communities by volunteering. Numerous places and organizations need volunteers for all types of events, purposes and activities. Old retired people may volunteer at a retirement home, assisting people with crafts or singing. They may also volunteer at a food pantry or soup kitchen to help people in need.

    Sports

    • Golf is one common sport that does not require a lot of strenuous effort, but is an ideal physical hobby for older people. Other sporting hobbies might be attending sporting events, joining a senior citizen team of softball, fishing, biking and hiking.
