How to Cut Galvanized Metal With a Torch

You may cut galvanized metal using a torch. The coating used to galvanize the metal does not change the properties that make it possible to cut using oxy-fuel torches. Depending on the type of metal, you may cut some galvanized metals with oxy-propane or oxy-MAPP torches. Cut galvanized steel and other hard metals with an oxy-acetylene torch. Take precautions when working with fuel torches including wearing gloves, an apron and a mask.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the metal on saw horses over open air. Put on all safety equipment.

    • 2

Open the valve on the fuel tank to between 10 and 12 lbs. Do not ever use more then 15 lbs. of acetylene to prevent dangerous situations. Turn on the valve on the torch to create a flame several inches long.

    • 3

Turn on the oxygen valve at the tank, but do not depress the trigger to release a stream. The valve should be open to between 20 and 40 pounds per square inch.

    • 4

Hold the flame against the metal so the small blue flame inside the larger flame is against the cut line. Depress the oxygen trigger.

    • 5

Move the flame over a small area of the cut line until the cut appears. Continue down until the cut is complete.
