DIY Chum Dispenser

Chum dispensers are used for offshore fishing and shark fishing. The dispenser is filled with preprepared chum -- a mix of fish parts and meat -- and thrown behind the boat, often attached to weights. The chum falling out of the dispenser attracts larger fish and sharks. Paying careful attention to current and depth in needed for chumming to be effective. A chum dispenser can be made at home with a drill and some PVC parts.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill
  • Quarter-inch drill bit
  • 1 foot long, 3-inch diameter PVC pipe
  • 3-inch diameter PVC female adapter socket

Instructions

    • 1

Apply PVC cement to the inside of the drain fitting and the outside of one end of the PVC tube. Press the two together so that the drain fitting is permanently attached to the tube.

    • 2

Cover the outside of the female adapter socket and the other end of the PVC tub with cement. Push the two together. Allow the glue to dry for the amount of time recommended on the packaging.

    • 3

Attach the quarter-inch bit to the drill. Drill some holes around the PVC tube. Some commercial dispensers use six rows of six holes each spaced evenly around the tube.

    • 4

Screw the male plug onto the female adapter.

    • 5

Drill a quarter-inch hole through the square section on the top of the male plug. This will allow you to attach a rope to the chum dispenser so that it can hang by the side of the boat.
