How to Break a Weld

A weld is used to hold one or more pieces of metal together, much like a solder, and only much stronger. You find welded pieces almost anywhere: cars, guns and other things that you use on a daily basis. Occasionally, you might need to break a weld to fix part of the equipment. For example, you must break the weld on some guns to fix or replace the bolt. While no method works every time, you can approach it from different angles to weaken and, ideally, break the weld.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut with the Dremel at the place where the weld attaches to the original piece. Do not try to break the weld in the middle. The goal is to break it at the meeting place of the original metal with the weld.

    • 2

Use a flathead screwdriver to break off small pieces of the weld. Place the flat part of the screwdriver on top of a piece you need to break off. Carefully, but firmly, hammer the top of the screwdriver to break off smaller pieces of the weld.

    • 3

Place one of the original pieces of a weld on a table while the weld hangs over the table to where it's unsupported. For example, if you are trying to break the weld of two board-like metal pieces: Lay one board on the table with the other board hanging off so that the middle of the weld lines up with the ends of the table. Hammer the unsupported side to break the weld.
