How to Build a Hawaiian Sling for Fishing

A Hawaiian sling pierces through the water and jabs the belly of an unsuspecting fish. The sling is a tool used by people fishing in shallow water for a variety of fish. It provides an alternative to using nets or fishing rods. You can tie a string to the end of the sling and to your wrist so you don't lose your sling. Always treat the weapon with extreme care, and only use it when fishing.

Things You'll Need

  • Five-foot fishing rod
  • Pliers
  • File
  • Saw
  • 3 bicycle wheel spokes
  • 30 feet of fishing line
  • 5 oz. superglue
  • Sling-shot strap

Instructions

    • 1

Bend down each eye of the fishing rod with pliers to remove them, then scrape the base with a file until it is smooth. Cut the handle off with a saw. Remove all the plastic by peeling it off. The rod should now be clean of any additions.

    • 2

File the point of each bicycle spoke until each is at about a 30-degree angle. Measure roughly two feet of fishing line. Place your points together and ensure they are even. Wrap the fishing line around them about three inches from the point, then tie it. Dab superglue on the fishing line and wait for it to dry.

    • 3

Dab superglue about an inch from the end of the rod. Wrap fishing line around the dab of glue and gradually move it to the tip. Squeeze a line of glue on the line and then let it dry.

    • 4

Fully saturate the fishing line wraps with superglue. Place the point of the spokes through the tip of the rod about an inch, then superglue the spokes to the end of the rod.

    • 5

Slide fishing line down between each spoke. Wrap the line around the end, where the spokes meet the rod, until the spokes and rod are secure. Continue to wrap the line down the rod for five inches. Wrap it back up and then down again. Fully saturate the string with superglue on the fishing line and let it dry.

    • 6

Wrap the ends of the sling-shot band at the handle of the rod to about an inch from the top. Superglue the wraps and allow them to dry.
