Instructions
Cut out a square from steel to use as the faceplate. Ensure the steel is free of any blemishes or imperfections. A 4-inch square should be enough for a simple faceplate. Make the piece exactly square. File down the sharp edges and around the corners. Score the newly created square with a large X. Find the center of square to put the X. This is crucial for your lathe to work perfectly.
Drill a hole into the center of the X using a 12-mm bit piece on a drill. Use cutting fluid and go slowly. Place the metal rod into the new hole inside the square and weld it securely into place.
Slide the pillow block bearings onto the rod. One should be at one-third and the other should be at two-thirds the length of the rod. Drill four holes into the faceplate three-quarters from each of the four corners even in length away from each other.
Bolt bearings onto the block of wood to hold the metal rod into place on the faceplate. Attach the rod into the hand drill that you use. This will be what powers your lathe.
