Percy at the Water Tower Set
Make sure the child you're giving the Percy LEGO set to is old enough to play with it. The LEGO pieces that come with the Percy at the Water Tower set are slightly larger than conventional pieces, but the components are not suitable for children under the age of 2.
Go through the set to make sure you have all the pieces. There should be a total of 15 pieces: a turn-table block, two train track pieces, the train engine, the train's face, the train compartment, the train wheels, the train pipe, a brick cutout block, three 2-by-4 blocks and three 2-by-2 blocks.
Put the two train track pieces together to make the track for Percy to ride on.
Assemble Percy. The wheels are the base. The face piece goes on the front of the wheels, and the engine pieces goes on the back half with the compartment piece in the middle. Finally, the pipe piece can be connected to the top of the engine.
Build the water tower. Use the two large brown LEGOs as the base and then stack the five piece of the trunks on the base. On top of the trunk, you'll snap on the two blue pieces, putting the wider blue piece that has a faucet attached to it on top.
Standard LEGOs
Choose a wide ground base for the water tower. LEGO sells bases in many sizes, but the wider, thicker bases will provide more support to keep your water tower from tipping over.
Create a plan for how specific you want the water tower to be. If you are using all standard-sized LEGOs, you will need to create multiple legs so that the tower will remain balanced. However, if you purchase LEGO posts or other materials to balance the water tower, you can create one solid trunk going up the middle of the base, while using the posts around the outside.
Test out your plan using LEGO's Digital Designer online. The program is designed so that you can virtually build your water tower to make sure that it has the dimensions needed to remain in place. You can also purchase hard-to-find pieces through the program, such as walls that you be used for the water storage tank.
Construct more difficult towers as your skills improve. For example, you might start off with a a square tank with thick posts and realize that you can make the posts thinner and round out the tanks as you go along. As an expert, you might even attempt to build a large water tower, where you can use different colors of LEGOs to spell out the name of a city on the tank.
