How to Make Pierce Points in Wood

A pierce point in a piece of wood is used to mark a nail or drill location. Making a pierce point in wood requires you to use a tool called a center punch. This is a metal tool with a sharp tip that is used to create an impression. The impression indicates the location of a nail or where to drill a pilot hole. You can find a center punch at your local hardware or home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the piece of wood with the tape measure. Mark the location to make the pierce point by using the pencil.

    • 2

Determine the size of center punch to use, such as 1/8 of an inch. The size will depend on the size of the drill bit if you are drilling a hole in the wood.

    • 3

Align the tip of the center punch on the pencil mark that you made in the wood.

    • 4

Strike the top of the center punch with the hammer to create a pierce point. Repeat this step if the point in the wood is too shallow.

    • 5

Repeat this process to make additional pierce points in multiple pieces of wood.
