Measure the piece of wood with the tape measure. Mark the location to make the pierce point by using the pencil.
Determine the size of center punch to use, such as 1/8 of an inch. The size will depend on the size of the drill bit if you are drilling a hole in the wood.
Align the tip of the center punch on the pencil mark that you made in the wood.
Strike the top of the center punch with the hammer to create a pierce point. Repeat this step if the point in the wood is too shallow.
Repeat this process to make additional pierce points in multiple pieces of wood.
