How to Put a Belt on a Go Kart

A go kart has a belt-driven constant variable transmission (CVT). This style of transmission is also deployed on snowmobiles and some automobiles. It uses two clutches that open and close, moving the belt up and down their V-shaped pulleys. This action changes the drive ratio from the engine to the rear drive wheels. The drive belt occasionally needs changing due to driver abuse or regular wear. Installing a new belt is simple once you know the technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the back end of the go kart off the ground by placing wood blocks under its rear frame.

    • 2

Remove the belt guard by pulling out the cotter pin and pulling it off.

    • 3

Position the belt beside the clutches so that the arrow printed on its top is pointing towards the front of the machine.

    • 4

Wrap the belt around the clutch attached to the engine then wrap the other end of the belt around the clutch fastened to the wheels. The belt should not make it completely on the second clutch.

    • 5

Rotate the secondary clutch with your free hand while pushing the belt into position. It will slide on as the clutch rotates.
