How to Enhance Color in Cultured Stone

Cultured stone, molded concrete made to like like natural stone, is a cheaper and in some cases stronger alternative to real stone. It can be made to look like anything from marble to granite and just about any texture in between, making it an excellent option for the most difficult projects. One particularly interesting trait of cultured stone is the consumer's ability to have it made or changed to the color of his preference using a simple staining product.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the concrete surface by cleaning and scrubbing it of any debris, dust or mold. Use soapy water, concrete cleaner, bleach or the cleanser of your preference as necessary. Rinse off the cleaners and allow the area to dry completely.

    • 2

Use painter's tape and the drop cloth to cover any areas you do not wish to paint. This can include corners, window ledges or even the floor.

    • 3

Mix the tint and base together in a bucket, following the directions specific to the product you have chosen. The exact proportions may vary depending on the brand, so make sure you read the directions and mix appropriately.

    • 4

Pour your paint mixture into a high-volume, low-pressure paint sprayer, then spray the area you want to stain. Hold the nozzle about 1 foot from the surface and move it from left to right to achieve an even coat.

    • 5

Examine the stain effect after the paint has dried for three to five hours, and if necessary apply more coats. For a translucent effect, use only two to three coats. For a deeper color, use as many coats as you feel necessary. Always allow the paint a few hours of drying time between coats.

    • 6

Clean out your paint sprayer and then fill it with concrete sealant. Avoid fading stain by applying the sealant in the same way you applied the stain. Wait 24 hours after finishing the last coat of stain before sealing it. Once the sealant has dried, remove the painter's tape and drop cloth.
