How to Make a Hunting Mask

Big game animals, such as deer and bear, have a gifted sense of smell. Regardless of how still and quiet you may be when hunting big game, the animal will know you are there. In order to become truly invisible to the animal, you must mask your scent. Hunters have used materials found in nature, such as pine needles, rabbit tobacco and deer urine to create their own masks for centuries. You can purchase hunting masks at any sporting good store, but some hunters feel a stronger connection to nature by making their own.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large pot halfway with water. Place the pot on the stove.

    • 2

Place as many of the plant materials into the pot as will fit. The plant materials used will vary depending on your hunting area. Pine needles, sage leaves and rabbit tobacco are all strong-smelling plants and good options provided they grow in the hunting area.

    • 3

Bring the pot of water and plants to a boil. Allow the pot to continue boiling until the liquid has reduced 75 percent. When the water has reached the desired concentration, turn off the stove and allow the liquid to cool.

    • 4

Use the slotted spoon to remove the plant materials from the pot. Hold the slotted spoon over the pot for several seconds to allow the concentrated liquid to drip back into the pot. Discard the drained plant materials.

    • 5

Unscrew the top of the spray bottle. Place the funnel into the neck of the spray bottle and fill the bottle with the concentrated liquid. Replace the spray bottle top.

    • 6

Squirt the mask onto your clothes before arriving at your hunting destination.
